Architecture in search of net-zero-organic nanodots?
In our cities everyone is obsessed either with archaeology of invaders or 'nature' or with membership to some exclusive club. A garden-a-square-of-grass or window plantations, is nature (!) to our cities, landscape, with heartless buildings and hard paved walkways, do not take root (place) in our soil or in Wilderness of our forest preserve like 'the ridge'. Watch what metro is up to on the ridge' area! Architecture of unrelated facts of future, do not relate to architecture of imagination or what can exist unadulterated or unspoiled; in spite of 'games' and more to come like finding water (traces) on ' Chandamama', however, no one is explaining why and how it failed after taking off from Sri Hari Kota? Traces of water do not solve our dry taps or thirst of our cities.
The trees keep the shape of wind even when the wind has fled and is no longer there, so words (and even walls) guard the shape of man even when man is no longer there, ‘to do or die’ for the legacy inherited to look after with any relevance worth our own or that of Gandhiji's.
‘Architecture' is not merely a romantic scenery, nor it is an intellectualised yearning for an 'escape' to decipher or to attain peace. Our architecture in midst of flowering and fragrant trees, creepers and bushes is what is yet to be attempted with equal emphasis to create, what is true and 'ours' but also to introspection, narrative and sometimes even to romantic scenery. Preference for geometry or irregularities woven into our city-fabric, is needed to escape all that is mundane to architects and planners' they ought to be more concerned to perform like Lutyens and his wife lady Emily were, while planning and building our unique 'garden city' of New Delhi.
We need sunken, jogging and cycling tracks of undulating contours, walls of water-falls to relieve monotony of severe concrete competing with glass-boxes, eying each other to out-perform. Our children need more of letting themselves go, with falling waters and platforms to take deep breath. On sunken arbour and informal congregation enclaves for spontaneous gatherings and performances. These and more are, what we need to weave as design elements of convenient resequency instead of our otherwise mixed-up urban thinking and copycat existence. All said and lamented, look what happened to Ravana' on Vijaya-day this year? All his heads didn't blow-up. Some eight or nine were, twirling their moustaches in spite of Hanuman, Rama, Laxman and the VIP's huddled together at a safe distance, watching all this and I am sure, much more, than what happened must we still burn effigies of our also-imagined Ravanas thus, to celebrate? Let me remind that "Zero", has been, India's unparalleled contribution to the numbers, there was nothing after ix. Shouldn't our architecture also celebrate such khoja?
With full faith and Claim I dare say that you have maintained and upheld cause of architecture and planning in an undiluted manner only A+D can claim. From early beginnings, When I used to be one of the 'also there on A+D, I am delighted that you have travelled Without any rough weather or tongue-in cheek fashion. One can safely say, many happy cruising in such choppy time when everything is up for grabs and gluttony.
Looking forward, as always, to your many more years!
