A Symbolic Gateway (Page 2)

Along the taxiway system, there is a 45Om deep functional Zone for various airport facilities such as cargo, hangars, ATC, tower, low cost Terminal operational bases, etc. These functions are located so as to optimise the transportation need within the airport while expansions can take place within each functional area without affecting the neighbouring areas. The phasing strategy of the master plan includes a stepwise growth to a total capacity of about 50Mbpa.

MASTER PLAN 5OMPPA:
The Terminal: Some simple design principles which were employed in the design of the Hyderabad airport include: make it simple, make it flexible; make it "loose fit make it convenient, comfortable and attractive; maximize revenue generating areas, be generous with floor area which is cheap in India; and be mean with mechanical installations that are expensive in India.

Architectural concept: Beyond the pragmatic and technical, a great part of the challenge has been to create a sense of place and identity specific to this location. This is India. This is Hyderabad!

The foreigners' first meeting With India is most often the airport terminal. This has traditionally been a rather mixed pleasure with somewhat lacking facilities and level of service. Outside the impression is strong: temperature, humidity, smells and the intensity of masses of milling people in colourful robes mixed with all categories of vehicles. Beyond the immediate area, one often senses a notion of big trees and lush vegetation.

In the design, an attempt has been made to systematise these impressions to recreate the atmosphere, the ambiance and the genius loci and to create a modern, efficient and attractive terminal building in response to the ambient climatic conditions and available building technology. There is a spacious plaza- "Airport Village', in front of the terminal for visitors and greeters, which at the same time, is an arena for sale, service food and beverage. A textile roof will protect the plaza from Sun and rain. A generous and pleasant park extends from the Airport Village and provides fine areas for waiting as well as access to the car parks, bus terminal, hotels, etc.

The true Indian Sense of place is to be found in the trinity of the modern Terminal, the Airport Village and the park. Together, these three elements create an ambiance and atmosphere, which gives the airport a truly unique sense of place.
