25 years of good ideas and good taste (page 2)

Frank Lloyd wright once declared, "There is no such thing as bad publicity, just publicity!" His point is well taken in that we architects have no channel to reach the public eye, and when a client needs an architect's services, he requires an impartial place to browse for the possibilities. A+D has showcased our profession in a non-obtrusive and sophisticated manner. It has consistently presented Indian architecture at its best, and placed our profession on the same pedestal that foreign architects enjoy.

Students of architecture use A+D as an encyclopedia to find out who's who, what is where, and "What's up?' It is the meeting place of young artistic minds and older practitioners. It gives a platform to the 'new' without compromising the axioms of the 'old'. It is a kind of moveable feast that just keeps ongoing, serving up issue after issue of new ideas, keeping our minds alive and vibrant.

Architects, like all persons in the arts, are a competitive lot! whatever we may say, we love acknowledgement and exposure. We are working for ourselves and our secret agendas in our studios, but the testing place of our values is out there in the big bad anonymous world. It is 'out there' in the public eye. Where our ideas are validated and confirmed, or tossed aside and forgotten. A good artist is always back in there after a failure, with a new shot at life. He makes a fresh attempt to rediscover the true nature of things, and to express that truth as a new piece of art. Journals, awards and appreciation from our fellow professionals are where the world is at when the sun slowly sinks behind the mountains and we have to sit back and think where we have been, where we are, and where we are going? What, after all, is "the truth?" What is "good taste"? And Who says so?

The answer is that the truth is blowing in the winds, but A+D presents to us the broad landscape in which the pure Wind flows. It is a vessel in which the flame of good ideas and good taste burns!

The End.
